EXTENSION: WHAT IS IT?
NMSU’s Cooperative Extension Service
serves a unique role throughout the state
by providing New Mexico’s citizenry and
communities with efective leadership and
collaboration to foster economic, educational
and community development.
Educational programs conducted in communities across the state
are largely determined by local advisory committees and stakeholder
groups. Tese educational programs are delivered by county- and
state-level NMSU Extension faculty throughout the university
who specialize in an area of concern to New Mexicans. Often these
Extension faculty represent the single state-wide or regional source
for research-based information on a particular topic.
With research facilities and Extension faculty located across the
state, we partner with local communities to create solutions for
local problems. Extension helps by:
• Creating tomorrow’s leaders
• Building job security
• Assisting in the management of resources
• Teaching the youth
• Encouraging family well-being
• Assisting communities with sustainable agriculture

CES Highlights
Growing Forward Farm Youth Tours
Students touring a farm sounds like a simple feld trip, but that
educational excursion can not only help fll agricultural knowledge
and employment gaps in our community, but also promote healthier
lifestyles for San Juan County. Growing Forward Farm youth tours
allows participants to experience a working farm operation, learn
about ways to recreate outdoors, and explore six farm activities.
Creating systems and opportunities for farm visits that connect to NM
educational benchmarks makes school tours fundamental not only to
the Growing Forward Farm project and Cooperative Extension, but to
new and expanding agri-tourism ventures. In partnership with the San
Juan Soil and Water Conservation District, Farmington Municipal
Schools, and the San Juan County Partnership, Healthy Kids, Healthy
Communities, educational tours are available for students in San Juan
County. Learn more at

AgXplorer
Te AgXplorer program gives children the opportunity to learn about
the importance of agriculture. Led by NMSU CES and the New
Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau, AgXplorer is an agricultural literacy
program for New Mexico, which helps coordinate ag organizations that
deliver educational programs. AgXplorer seeks to provide a foundation
of knowledge about how food is produced and what the impact of
agriculture has on people’s daily lives. Learning experiences and handson demonstrations are hosted in communities and are brought to the
public by a traveling trailer. To learn more or request an event, email
Extension State 4-H Agent Cheryl Butterfeld at cherylb@nmsu.edu or
